Carney set to make it stick, this time.

Todd Carney has seen this all before.

Rep jerseys. Photos shoots. A forest of microphones.

We have seen it all too, but somehow, yesterday was different. There was a lighthearted mood at Sydneys Moore Park where the Country Origin side gathered to meet the media. Coach Laurie Daley spoke enthusiastically and at length about a range of issues as the players milled around. But when it came Carneys time to face the throng, we got a warning.

‘Not so many questions for Todd, he doesn’t have as much to say.’

The previous record hangs in the air. The slowly fading memories of stuff-ups and headlines – of talent going to waste. Of slow demises followed by Dally M redemption. People have been let down – and they don’t forget too quickly.

Carney stepped up to face the media that have for so long created the headlines marking moments he’d rather forget. But when the first question was asked, the Dally M winner spoke with a firm resolve. That winning was first and foremost in his mind. That the honour of a Country jersey is still there. That his desire to represent his state is undiminished. Here was someone who has had everything, and then had everything taken away.

It seems the wild child of the NRL has found a home under Shane Flanagan at Cronulla. He is responding to having some freedom and respect, rather than rules and scrutiny. It’s showing in his game, in the teams winning streak, and in his demeanour. The game of rugby league is a great believer in redemption stories, and while the media may have long memories, the game does not. Play well, and we will give you a shot. Carney has done that, and hence he wears the jumper.

Laurie Daley made that clear when he handed Greg Bird the captaincy. If you recall, Bird has had his troubles in the past.

But this is now, and Bird is a different player, and person. He spoke with passion about his call-up, with the humble tones of a man who realises his good fortune, and the self-belief that comes with knowing you have earned it.

That’s what makes this game great – the public resurrection of individuals, and the stories of redemption and inspiration that go with it. This should go for Robert Lui and Isaac Gordon as well. I don’t condone violence against women – in fact, Lui should be incarcerated for what he’s done. But then, sentences have been handed out, and the message delivered. If they play well enough, both players should be allowed to change their place in the games history.
